Maryanne ‘Baz’ Van Haandel has been a Hohepa resident for 55 years and loves it

Maryanne Van Haandel remembers the day her parents dropped her off at her new home at the age of 7.

The 62-year-old was one of the first residents at Hohepa, a group of homes for Cantabrians with intellectual disabilities that opened in 1965.

Most people know her as Baz, a name she says came after having “long hair like Basil Brush years ago”.
